Concerns have been expressed by Jamie Carragher and Thierry Henry regarding Gabriel Martinelli’s starting position for Arsenal ahead of this weekend’s pivotal Premier League matchup with Manchester City. The Brazilian winger’s future is under question, according to both analysts, following a string of subpar outings, which included his performance in Arsenal’s goalless draw with Atalanta in their Champions League opener.
Against Atalanta, Arsenal found it difficult to generate clear scoring opportunities; in the second half, Martinelli squandered the team’s best opportunity. Martinelli’s goalless and assist-free streak now stands at 17 games as a result of this lost opportunity, which has put pressure on his starting position—especially with such a big game approaching.
In response, Jamie Carragher expressed his opinion that Martinelli’s place in the starting lineup for Sunday’s game at the Etihad Stadium is in jeopardy. Martin Odegaard’s absence from the match against Atalanta, according to Carragher, was a major contributing factor to Arsenal’s creative difficulties. He noted that while Kai Havertz, assigned to a similar role, didn’t quite fit into the system effectively, Odegaard’s ability to connect with Bukayo Saka and open up space for his teammates was greatly missed.
Carragher hinted that Leandro Trossard could be substituted for Martinelli if Arsenal decides to play against City. Carragher stated, “I think the manager will likely stick with him despite his lack of composure in front of goal, even though Martinelli’s position is in question.”
Speaking with Carragher, Thierry Henry concurred that Martinelli is going through a difficult time, particularly given his extended goal drought. Henry underlined that because the team needs to rely on one another in order to develop as a cohesive unit, this is all a part of Martinelli’s learning process. Henry acknowledged that Martinelli’s form is a concern, but he expressed hope that players like Declan Rice would help Martinelli and others get through this difficult time.
Rio Ferdinand, a former defender for Manchester United, added his voice and expressed concern about Arsenal’s lack of offensive threat against Atalanta. Ferdinand emphasized that Arsenal lacked the creativity and ball retention necessary to contend with a top team such as Manchester City. He noted that Arsenal’s limited opportunities against City will require them to be far more clinical and decisive, and he pointed out that Martinelli’s lost opportunity against Atalanta serves as an example of the work Arsenal needs to do to improve their finishing.
“They have to take advantage of their opportunities if they get them against City,” Ferdinand continued. Arsenal’s forwards must improve, particularly in front of goal, as City won’t give them five or six chances.
The focus will be on Martinelli as Arsenal gets ready to take on Manchester City and whether he can get back to his previous level in time to support his team in what looks to be a pivotal matchup in the title race.
