Striker Viktor Gyokeres of Sporting CP has hinted that he may leave the team in the last few days of the summer transfer window.
Throughout the summer transfer window, Arsenal expressed interest in the Sweden international, as the team was eager to bolster their offensive line. Having moved from Coventry City just a year prior, the 26-year-old has made an impression in his first season in one of Europe’s top leagues, scoring 43 goals in 50 games for Sporting.
It appears that he is still scoring goals. He has already netted six goals in his first three games in the Portuguese top league this season, including a hat trick in Friday’s 5-0 victory over Farenese.
In addition to the two goals he scored against Nacional and the goal and assist he received in the season opener against Rio Ave., this completes his collection. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that he is being connected to some of the biggest teams in Europe.
As the transfer window approaches its last few days, the player himself has now addressed the links. “We’re not sure what will transpire,” he said to the Portuguese press.
We shall see; it’s not just up to me, but I feel comfortable here. I’m not worried about anything else, but in football, there are usually unknowns that could happen quickly during the transfer window. However, I enjoy my time here and don’t feel stressed.”
Gyokeres’ Sporting contract has an £86 million release clause, but if Arsenal decides to move, they may try to negotiate a lower price. The player’s message and Sporting manager Ruben Amorim’s were similar when they spoke last week.
“We have no control over the transfer market. Should the players who made a significant impact the previous season depart, there would be a significant influx of revenue, he stated.
“I’m not at all concerned. This year, we’re playing in the Champions League, and we want to win the title once more. Even though we’re totally focused, anything can happen before the window closes.”
