Arsenal defeated Wolves handily to start their Premier League campaign in the same commanding manner as they did it the previous year. The Gunners earned three points and looked composed and in control the entire game as they prepared to mount a serious title challenge.
There have only been two new signings for Arsenal during this summer’s transfer window: David Raya and Riccardo Calafiori. But Mikel Arteta started a lineup that was familiar against Wolves because Raya had already spent the previous season on loan at the Emirates, with Calafiori sitting on the sidelines.
Arsenal wanted to add more players to their roster, especially in midfield, but their attempt to sign top target Martin Zubimendi was unsuccessful. Furthermore, a lot of gossip has connected the team to different strikers, and there are still unanswered questions concerning the roles played by Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
Mikel Arteta on Signing a Striker at Arsenal
Havertz was trusted by Arteta to spearhead the attack, and the German responded by netting the game’s first goal just twenty-five minutes in. To improve Arsenal’s attacking options later in the game, Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard were added from the bench. It appears from Arteta’s post-match remarks that he is happy with the three strikers he currently has available.
“I have faith in [Havertz], we have faith in [Gabriel Jesus],” Arteta said after the last whistle. Trossard’s Leandro has also filled that role. Since each of us fits a different role differently, the best thing we can do is put our trust in the players we already have and work to develop them. We are concentrating on them since they are highly skilled and motivated to succeed.
Is Arsenal Misfiring Here?
More people are beginning to think that Arsenal might actually win the Premier League this year. With the departure of Julian Alvarez weakening Manchester City, and after coming dangerously close in previous seasons, the Gunners appear ready for a successful campaign.
With the addition of Calafiori, Arsenal’s left-back worries were allayed, and they now have elite options at almost every position. The striker department, though, seems to be the weak point. Jesus and Havertz have not produced 20 goals a season on a regular basis, and their lack of consistency in front of goal could prove costly in a close race for the championship.
Given Arteta’s remarks, Arsenal may decide not to spend heavily in a marquee striker during this transfer window. It remains to be seen if this choice was a calculated risk or a mistake; only time will tell if it was a brilliant move or not.
