The legendary Chelsea player John Terry recently discussed his predictions for the Premier League title race, highlighting an Arsenal player he thinks could be essential to the Gunners’ hopes of challenging Manchester City and other rivals for first place.
Terry acknowledged that Arsenal appears well-prepared for a serious title challenge in the upcoming season, despite his strong ties to Chelsea. He underlined that although Arsenal has many gifted players, Martin Ødegaard stands out as the key to their success.
The Norwegian midfielder, who signed a permanent contract with Arsenal in 2021, has become an important member of the squad. His remarkable passing range, playmaking acumen, and command of the game’s tempo have earned him comparisons to some of the best playmakers Terry has ever faced. But it’s Ødegaard’s leadership and consistency on the field that really make him stand out.
Terry pointed out that Ødegaard has shown himself to be different from the many young players at Arsenal who have failed to perform consistently at the highest level. His ability to put on outstanding performances in big games—especially against elite teams like Chelsea and Manchester City last season—was a major factor in Arsenal’s Champions League qualification.
Terry believes Ødegaard will improve even more in the next season now that he has completed a full season. According to him, the Norwegian is the engine of Arsenal’s attack, setting the play and dismantling defenses with his incisive passing. Ødegaard will be the center of attention for opponents at this level of play, which will open up more opportunities for Arsenal’s other offensive players, like Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Martinelli.
Although Terry sincerely acknowledged that Arsenal has put together a strong team, he would still prefer to see Chelsea win the championship the following year. He predicts that Ødegaard’s talent will be a major talking point throughout the league in the upcoming season and believes he could be the difference-maker that takes them to Premier League glory.
