You need to bring something else': Ian Wright explains what Martinelli must do to regain starting role

Ian Wright is becoming increasingly concerned about Gabriel Martinelli’s potential to start for Arsenal on a regular basis in the future.

On his podcast, the legendary Gunners player discussed the Brazilian winger, saying, “With Martinelli, I think that we know what Martinelli is about in terms of the pace in his finishing.”But if he can’t use me on the left, he might need to consider what else I can bring to the game. Can I do more to ensure that I can potentially be a center-forward if that isn’t going to happen for me?

“If Trossard keeps playing the way he is, I don’t see how Martinelli can get him out unless he does something else. I think there is something to be said about him upskilling again; otherwise, with Mikel and the way Mikel plays, the control, you need to bring something else.”

Martinelli’s season at Arsenal hasn’t been too bad. He has recently seen a decline in form despite having eight goals and five assists.

In his last nine Premier League games, he has failed to register a goal or an assist, and he has watched Leandro Trossard take over at Arsenal as the left winger. Although the 22-year-old still has time on his side, he must demonstrate significant progress if he is to figure in Mikel Arteta’s long-term plans at the team.
