With an easy 5-0 victory over Chelsea on Tuesday, Arsenal extended their lead at the top of the Premier League standings to three points, albeit a very temporary one. Leandro Trossard’s goal and doubles from Ben White and Kai Havertz rounded out the decisive victory.
The win not only made sure that Mikel Arteta’s team put maximum pressure on Manchester City and Liverpool before their games against Everton and Brighton, but it also significantly increased the goal differential. It’s the team’s second straight victory after a strong comeback to two losses the previous week.
Havertz, Trossard, and Bukayo Saka formed a formidable attacking trident, and Martin Odegaard was always the first to open the score against Chelsea with ever-more-ingenious threaded passes. Arsenal’s dominance was unrelenting as Declan Rice drove forward in possession and anchored the team from deep, cutting through the blue shirts in front of him.
Djordje Petrovic made several outstanding saves for Chelsea, but they went unrewarded, so the game’s final score could have been even more lopsided. By the end, Rice had scored a goal, and the home fans were ready for some layoffs.
In less than a week, the mood in north London has drastically shifted. Football.london contrasts Arsenal’s and their title rivals’ run-ins here.
