Arsenal get massive Premier League title boost ahead of Aston Villa after Liverpool loss

Without even kicking a ball on Sunday, Arsenal’s chances of winning their first Premier League title in 20 years were drastically increased. The Gunners were able to observe as Liverpool lost at Anfield against a resolute Crystal Palace team, setting up their highly anticipated matchup with Aston Villa.

Eberechi Eze’s goal at the end of a deft move put Jurgen Klopp’s team ahead early on, and they were unable to capitalize on their superior territory for the majority of the remaining minutes. There were several chances for Palace to take the lead in Merseyside, most notably Jean-Philippe Mateta’s clear-cut effort that Alisson miraculously parried.

Liverpool also had their fair share of opportunities, with Dean Henderson stopping multiple spectacular shots in the Palace goal. Curtis Jones missed a one-on-one opportunity despite being clearly in the goal zone, and Darwin Nunez and Luiz Diaz also came dangerously close to tying the score.

Late in the game, a huge block by the Palace defense denied Mohamed Salah, and former Reds defender Nathaniel Clyne also stopped what appeared to be a certain goal. Oliver Glasner’s Eagles managed to hold out for a potentially championship-defining win despite mounting pressure.

Liverpool lost their opportunity to move back to the top of the table after Manchester City’s 5-1 victory over Luton Town on Saturday, and now sit in third place, where they began the day. The weekend’s main matchup pits Arsenal against Champions League-chasing Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium.

With six weeks left, Liverpool has no chance of winning the title after losing to Manchester United at Old Trafford seven days prior. Before the season ends, Liverpool themselves must play Villa.
