“We’re giving up on him joining Arsenal before next season because we can’t afford him,” said Barcelona Boss Xavi has hinted that Arsenal has closed a deal to acquire a highly skilled and versatile player for whom Barcelona is unable to pay the transfer fee because of their financial limitations. Arsenal remains interested in signing Joao Cancelo of Man City.

According to Sport, Arsenal may surpass Barcelona in the summer transfer window to acquire Joao Cancelo, a defender for Manchester City.

Despite having an abundance of full-backs on their roster at the moment, the north London giants are still connected to a potential Cancelo transfer.

After Cancelo’s season-long loan, Sport (page 8) reports that Barcelona is interested in re-signing him.

They can only afford a second loan, though, with a purchase option of about €25 million.

Arsenal has stated that they still wish to sign Cancelo, while City believes they can get nearly twice as much from other suitors.

Unlikely to sign a contract with Canelo this summer

Last summer, the Gunners expressed interest in signing the Portuguese international, but City was hesitant to engage in negotiations with a direct rival for the championship.

Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus had bolstered the Gunners’ roster in 2022, so they were not about to do the same with Cancelo.

This made it possible for the former Inter Milan player to transfer to Barcelona, where in 33 appearances, he scored four goals and provided four assists to establish himself as a star.

Although he is once again being linked to Arsenal, we don’t believe a deal will be reached. It is improbable that City will back down from their refusal to do business with Arsenal.

The Gunners’ management is also unlikely to spend €45–50 million for Cancelo, who turns 30 in May and might not be at his best for a while.

Cancelo, who Julian Nageslmann called “world class,” has expressed a wish to rejoin Barcelona and could compel Cityzense to work out a new loan arrangement.

We believe that this is all conjecture and that a summer agreement is improbable.
