The Catalan newspaper Sport reported that Frankie de Jong, who Barcelona is reportedly asking to sell for €100 million this summer, has caught the attention of several teams, including Chelsea.
All of this seems improbable: in the past 12 months, Chelsea has purchased two midfielders for at least €100 million and a few others for less. De Jong also doesn’t exactly match the pattern of the club acquiring young players that we’ve seen.
This begs the question: is Barcelona trying to make their player appear in demand by leaking information? Here, it appears that the plan is rather clear: raise awareness of De Jong and attempt to convince teams to submit bids this summer.
He currently ranks among Barcelona’s top three earners, and his pay is going up. Just like they did when they attempted to move him last summer, they want to get rid of him.
Chelsea supporters who are concerned that we might spend all of our striker money on a midfield player can relax; this is only wishful thinking on Sport’s part.
