The legendary Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has chastised Mikel Arteta for benching Aaron Ramsdale and thinks it will never work to have two goalkeepers that are in competition.

For the past nine Premier League and Champions League games, the English goalkeeper has been rested in favor of summer newcomer David Raya, who was brought in for his excellent distribution.

But the Spaniard has had some anxious moments when it comes to his passing and goalkeeping, most notably when Chelsea’s Mykhaylo Mudryk lobbed him last week at Stamford Bridge.

Wenger does not agree with Arteta’s decision to switch from a stated number one goaltender, but he is confident Ramsdale will have a chance to force his way back into the starting lineup.

The legendary Frenchman stated, “I personally like Ramsdale,” on beIN SPORTS on Saturday. Given his circumstances, I wouldn’t give up. I think he has a possibility to come back to the team.

Wenger said, “Better… better,” in response to the question of whether he believes Ramsdale is superior to Raya. I don’t know if he’s any better.

“I believe Ramsdale made crucial saves during the previous season’s games.”

Neither his distribution nor his feet pleased them.

His response, when asked which is more important: distribution or shot-saving, was, “To keep balls out of the net.”

However, having a strong team is something you always want to enhance when you’re in this position, and I know this has occurred to me many times.

Then you look around and ask yourself, “What can I do better there?” It appears to you that the distribution is coming from behind.

“It happened to me with center-backs as well; you realize that a player with better distribution from the back is not as good defensively and that his primary responsibility is defense.”
