Rumor has it that Arsenal is considering a deal for a versatile defender after being offered the chance to sign Karim Benzema.

After less than a year in the Saudi Pro League, Benzema wants to leave Al-Ittihad, and he has been connected to numerous European teams.

Financial Fair Play concerns have restricted Arsenal’s ability to acquire a new striker this month, even though it was one of their main priorities for the January transfer window.

Arsenal reportedly received a bid for Benzema earlier this month, but the Gunners are debating whether to buy a “versatile defender” before the transfer deadline on Wednesday. This information is reported by MailOnline.

After sustaining a cruciate ligament injury in August, Jurrien Timber is reportedly healing well, and Arsenal is hopeful that its £38 million acquisition from Ajax will be able to participate in the last two months of the campaign.

Benzema is rumored to be in talks to return to Lyon in the interim.

Before going to Real Madrid in 2009, the 36-year-old rose through Lyon’s academy and became one of Europe’s best young strikers.

Benzema and Al-Ittihad agreed to a three-year deal in June that will pay him €100 million (£85.5 million) every season.

Rumors surfaced in France last week, claiming that the Saudi club was “furious” with Benzema for starting training 17 days after his vacation in Mauritius.

17 days overdue, Benzema finally arrived on Thursday night. AFP was informed by a club insider that he was scheduled to return on January 2.

He was unavailable to us for ten days. The coach and management of the team are furious over what transpired.
