Arsene Wenger criticises one specific decision Mikel Arteta has made at Arsenal

Arsene Wenger has stated that he thinks it’s important to name a first-choice goalkeeper.

The renowned manager of Arsenal, Arsene Wenger, has acknowledged that he has doubts about Mikel Arteta’s strategy to increase competition among his goalkeepers.

Since joining Arsenal in 2021, England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has been exceptional, assisting the team’s seven-year absence from the Champions League. He was selected in the Premier League team of the year ahead of Manchester City’s treble winner Ederson because of his crucial role in Arsenal’s championship run the previous season.

Despite Ramsdale’s valiant efforts, Mikel Arteta replaced Ramsdale as Arsenal’s starting goalkeeper when he brought in fellow countryman David Raya on a temporary loan from Brentford in the summer.

However, there have been some uneasy moments during Raya’s time as the new first choice, raising concerns about Arteta’s insistence on a regular rotation between the two keepers.

Arsene Wenger has stated that he thinks it’s important to have a first-choice goalkeeper. Wenger stated, “Always,” to BeIN Sports. That’s what I think. I disagree with the idea of switching goalies and with the idea that the goalkeeper hierarchy should be unclear. That is ineffective.

Arteta has made it clear that he believes he has two excellent goalkeepers and plans to use both during games. In a recent match against Everton, Arteta gave an explanation for his choice to start Raya over Ramsdale, saying, “The same rationale that Fabio [Vieira] played here or Eddie [Nketiah] played instead of Gabriel Jesus.” Not a single question about why Gabriel Jesus hasn’t started has been directed towards me. In that changing room, he has more trophies than anyone, including me, but they don’t.

Although this is how things have always been done, I can’t play two players of this caliber at the same position. Like Aaron and Karl, David possesses amazing qualities, but we must put them to use.

In addition, Wenger offered his thoughts on Arteta’s decision to increase competition for the goalkeeping spot, saying, “I don’t know if [Ramsdale] is better.” All I can say is that last season, Ramsdale made some really important saves. They might not have been pleased with his distribution or footwork.
