Erling Haaland told to snub Ballon d'Or ceremony forever if Lionel Messi wins 2023 award

Seven-time winner Lionel Messi and Man City striker Erling Haaland are among the favourites to land the 2023 Ballon d’Or after being included on the 30-man shortlist

If Erling Haaland does not receive the Ballon d’Or this year, he has been warned to boycott the event for the rest of his life.

Seven Manchester City players, including Haaland, are among the 30 contenders on the list, which will be announced in Paris on October 30. Cristiano Ronaldo, a five-time winner who played in the Saudi Pro League in 2023, does not appear on the list for the first time in 20 years.

But following the now-36-year-old World Cup in Qatar last December, Lionel Messi, his longtime rival and winner of the prize seven times, is already the overwhelming favorite to win it eight times next month. Craig Burley, a former midfielder for Scotland and Chelsea, believes that when it comes time to award the Ballon d’Or trophy, just one name should be on everyone’s mind.

If Erling Haaland loses, shut down the business, Burley advised ESPN. “Lionel Messi won the World Cup, which is a fantastic accomplishment, but it only lasted for four weeks. His overall league performance wasn’t great. PSG performed poorly.

A. Erling Haaland? Over 50 goals, winning the FA Cup, Premier League, and Champions League. This honor ought to go to Erling Haaland. I am aware that many people cannot leave the Messi train, but consider the wider picture.

“Many muppet journalists are going to vote for Messi. Overall, Erling Haaland accomplished everything over a protracted period of time.

“This award, like a few others, drives me crazy, but he deserves it. However, I believe that it will be accompanied with sentimental blather because Messi won the World Cup and other accolades, and they will simply give him another one. And like Robert Lewandowski, if I were Erling Haaland, I would never accept another Ballon d’Or in my life.

Following their journey to the World Cup final, England’s Rachel Daly, Georgia Stanway, Millie Bright, and Mary Earps are on the shortlist for the women’s award. Daly was the highest scorer in the Women’s Super League previous season, and goalkeeper Earps received the Golden Glove award for maintaining four clean sheets during the competition.

One of six women nominated from Spain is Aitana Bonmati, who was crowned the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year last week. Spain’s victory at the Women’s World Cup last month was led by Bonmati. On social media, Bonmati wrote, “Grateful & proud to be nominated alongside great players.”
