Reason why Ilkay Gundogan left Manchester City to Barcelona

Prior to a free transfer from Manchester City to Barcelona, Ilkay Gundogan has finished his physical.

Despite leading his team to a historic treble of the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League this season, the midfielder’s contract at the Etihad Stadium is up and he is about to go. Several clubs, including Arsenal, have shown a lot of interest in him.

But Gundogan has decided to go to LaLiga and team up with Xavi rather than sign with the Gunners. Barca won the Spanish championship this past season and is looking forward to a stronger showing in the Champions League the following year.

The German midfielder got a medical in Munich, which, according to Mundo Deportivo, he passed. He met Mateu Alemany, the club’s sports director, together with his agent to sign the deal that will keep him at the Nou Camp for two years.

Although he will have to feature in more than half of Barcelona’s games in his second season, a third year is an option. Following several discussions since the end of the campaign, Alemany finalized the agreement in Germany on Wednesday.

Gundogan also spoke with the new manager Xavi, who shared his plans for Barca for the upcoming campaign. That was sufficient to persuade Gundogan that his next stop should be Catalonia.

Pep Guardiola, the manager of City, will be deeply disappointed by the news that Gundogan has chosen to join Barca. The German midfielder was expected to stay at the Etihad beyond the summer, the Spaniard had continued to believe.

The news is a huge blow for Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta

He is aware of my opinions. We are neighbors and share a floor, so he has been a close friend of my for a long time, as perhaps some of you are aware, Guardiola stated after City won the FA Cup.

“He performs superbly.

Hopefully, we can end on a positive note. Txiki [Begiristain], the football director, is still working on the agreement. His performance this season is excellent.

Mikel Arteta, who had identified Gundogan as one of his top targets for the summer, will also take a significant hit from the news. The Gunners manager had hoped to get both Gundogan and Rice during this transfer window, but it looks like he will be let down in both endeavors.

As they attempt to strengthen Arteta’s roster, Arsenal will be left regretting how they let Gundogan elude their grasp. Per Mertersacker, the head of the academy, had stated earlier in the month that they were in a strong position to sign him.

“I believe the clubs are lining up,” he remarked. We’re in a good situation since [Mikel] Arteta knows him and we probably haven’t lost touch. I believe he will take some time to process everything before selecting one of the four teams.
