It has been a remarkable football season as some of the best stars proved why they have the edge over others.

Some standout players were presented with Man of the Match awards after games for their significant contributions to their team’s performance.

They were recognised for displaying exceptional skill, leadership, or goal-scoring prowess throughout the game.

During the course of the season, some players received the plaque multiple times.

5. Christopher Nkunku (RB Leipzig)

The 25-year-old had a remarkable season, scoring 16 goals in 35 appearances. Nkuku shared the Bundesliga golden boot with Niclas Fullkrug of Werder Bremen.

His exploits saw him earn a national team call-up as he was part of the Les Blues squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Due to injury, he could not be part of any of the matches at the Mundial.

He was Bundesliga’s best player during the 2021-2022 season, as he continued his scintillating performance during the recently concluded campaign, Sport Skeeda reports.

4. Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)

The Belgian international is arguably one of the best players of the 2022-23 football season. He was pivotal to Manchester City’s treble.

De Bruyne scored seven goals and provided 16 assists in 32 appearances, helping the Cityzens to win the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League.

In the course of the season, the 31-year-old won a total of nine Man of the Match awards in the Premier League.

What a striker Randal Kolo Muani is growing to become. The 24-year-old has shown so much quality, especially in finishing.

He is also a good dribbler who creates chances for his teammates.

The Frenchman netted a total of 23 goals in all competitions this season and picked up 10 Man of the Match awards in the Bundesliga this term.

2. Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid)

Griezmann returned to his best this season. The Frenchman had an outstanding 2022-23 season, claiming a staggering 13 Man of the Match awards in the process.

Although he first moved to the club on loan, Griezmann proved to be completely different once his deal was made permanent.

In the Spanish La Liga season 2022/23, the forward played 26 matches (plus seven as a sub). He had 38 shots on target from a total of 75 shots and scored 13 goals, Infogol reports.

The 2022-23 football season will remain in the history books for superstar Lionel Messi, who also won the FIFA World Cup.

Despite the Argentine legend having a disappointing debut season at PSG, he had a remarkable second season.

In 31 Ligue 1 appearances this season, he scored 16 goals and provided 16 assists. The 35-year-old also won 14 Man of the Match awards in Ligue 1 this term.

Manchester City’s win over Inter Milan saw the end of an action-packed season, which essentially means players eyeing the Ballon d’Or award cannot do much else to affect their chances.

Lionel Messi is believed to be making a beeline for a record-extending eighth title after he led Argentina to a World Cup victory in December last year.
